A GRAVE WITHOUT FLOWERS

Another of McMullen's neat, sweet blends of romance and chicanery. Successful scriptwriter Robert Marne, bent on a reunion with ex-wife Emily, catches up with her as she tours England's gardens with a fellow American--wealthy, amiable Flora Wallace. And this sedate trio soon finds itself on the outskirts of crime--because the ladies' driver is gentlemanly drifter Denis Taunton, who's carrying a cigarette case (gift of ex-lover barmaid Luce) that contains the secret location of a cache of stolen loot hidden away by Luce's other lover, crook John Ticknell! So lethal Ticknell, recently released from prison, is on the trail of that cigarette case; Luce, truly in love with Denis, is on the trail too--as is the sister of Ticknell's mysteriously-disappeared robbery partner. And, with the incipient violence muted by the genteel ambience of country towns and great estates, this offers charm and suspense in equal measure, plus a lyrical bonus for garden-lovers. . . right up to the explosion of murder and a not-quite-convincing final flourish.
