My Friend Flicka has already become virtually a juvenile classic. This is, to some extent, more adult, in that there is a good deal of space given to conflict within marriage as Ken's parents face a difficult period of adjustment to failure. But in the main it is again a boy and horse story, as Ken faces the problems involved in rearing Flicka's colt, Thunderhead, sired by a famous racer, a throwback to the wild white stallion. Three years of a colt's life -- good adventure -- and at the close, Ken accepting a concesstion to the wild dominant strain.
