Judith, wealthily and wisely, wed to Ridge Chandler, returns to The Birches after her divorce, becomes a recluse dominated by fear; her sister Lois and brother Phil take a dim view of her withdrawal and demands until an unknown woman is found dead in the swimming pool. Terrence O Brien, ex-homicide and the Maynards' tenant, works fast but keeps his mouth shut while Lois has her shuttings between Judith's psychiatrist and O'Brien's clue-chasing to keep her in trouble. A complicated unknotting and unravelling provide a satisfactory Q.E.D. MRR and no age-withering or staling.
