by Mary Stewart ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 28, 1967
Christabel Mansel was potting about the Near East when she bumped into cousin Charles whom she hadn't seen in four years. Well, they had practically grown up inseparable and now he's so attractive and like her, clever and spoiled. The Mansels are a filthy rich lot. They decide to pay a visit to the family eccentric, Great Aunt Harriet who has been cloistered away in an immense castle in Lebanon where she supposedly has gone a bit dotty...dressing like an Arabian Prince...furthering the legend of the castle's former mistress who ruled her retinue with a whip. Christy gets into the forbidding place first where she finds a very strange Aunt Harriet, spends the night and finds herself trapped by a lood. In the meantime, she gets to know the odd staff, particularly the dreamy John Lethman. Meanwhile Charles sneaks in...later disappears. Hashish and gothic suspense wrapped up in flip dialogue. Like smoke it disappears but it won't disappoint the stalwart Stewart fan.
