SHE CAME IN A FLASH

When former Bostonian (now Californian) Emma Victor (She Came too Late) agrees to (1) get ex-druggie punk-rocker Nebraska Storm's signature on a contract guaranteeing her appearance at the Women's Benefit Concert and (2) visit and assess the mental state of Lana Flax, a brilliant physicist who's now a resident groupie at the Divine Vishnu Inspiration Center, she's soon immersed in trouble. Nebraska talks about getting ""wired,"" Lana is bludgeoned to death on the Center's beachfront, and all the Center people--handsome Sadhima; unhappy, sinister Lailieka; voluptuous, manipulative Bu Mper Lee; and dozens of ""yellows"" (ever-so-obedient disciples)--seem to have secrets Emma isn't ""enlightened"" enough to understand. All of which leads her to a sort of Center torture toom, a divine corpse, and a major drag bust before she peels away the wigs, yellow robes, and motives and discovers Lana's killer. A tad heavy on Emma's lesbian love life, but witty on cult politics, metaphysics, and finances. Wings has a nice, unsentimental, wry touch that might be better served with tauter plotting.
