DEVIL PONY

A crafty combination of high-interest lures--ghosts and horses--doesn't sustain this humdrum story of bumps and whinnys in the night. With clues like Wilbur's shifty eyes and dark looks (or is it shifty looks and dark eyes?), readers will be more disappointed than surprised to learn he's the poltergeist--pulling strings and wires--who's been trying to prevent Cousin Stu from taking a favorite Morgan pony back east. Hammering hearts, ""burning desires,"" and overlaid remarriage/stepson tensions notwithstanding, it's far from exciting, though easily digestible.
