by Matt Christopher ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 6, 1963
Once again (as in Challenge at Second Base, 1962-177-J55, and others), Matt Christopher has demonstrated his ability to describe a baseball game play by play, in this simple story about a Puerto Rican boy who is hypersensitive to the criticism of his teammates. String, the favorite player for the Royals, pointedly insults Chico each time he makes an error. The little outfielder gains the respect of String and the other players when he reveals his courage away from the ball park, and then proves himself to be a good athlete. The character studies are oversimplified and the plot is somewhat trite, but the book will nonetheless appeal to the younger sport fans in this age group.
