Rusty called fouls from the sideline as he watched the other boys run easily, ump and shoot for baskets. Rusty had been slowed down for two years now by the effects of polio; his feet always ended up in a tangle and he grew tired quickly. Hypersensitive to the ribbing of his classmates, he practised basketball and relentlessly-- but always by himself. The appearance of twenty-five year old Alec Dawes on the scene caused Rusty to change his attitude. A story which veers from the center of realism as Rusty rapidly becomes quite the star, is nonetheless a fast-paced one which focuses directly on basketball and play-by-play-descriptions-- and it is certain to be winner among young boys.
