THE AMAZING VOYAGE OF JACKIE GRACE

Beguiling illustrations grace a slight tale about an imaginary voyage from bathtub to pirate adventure. Jackie's free-standing Victorian tub is large enough for his elegant toy ship, but not for the British tars in full regalia who claim a ""big blow coming. . .and your mom said we could use the tub."" In they climb, with rough seas following and the tub afloat in an ocean gale before the ensuing argument is settled. As the storm clears, several pages later, the sailors' ship is discovered in the possession of pirates; Jackie boards and reclaims it in a brief skirmish in which the chief action is wopping the captain's foot with a cannonball. And then it's time to get out of the tub. Faulkner's detailed, cross-hatched illustrations are lively and full of humor, his skillfully applied watercolors evoking a thunderous, watery world, where dark clouds display glowering faces. Captain, crew, and pirates have an earthy, comic-opera air; Jackie is appropriately wide-eyed or smug. Entertaining pictures, predictable story.
