Maurice Hindus has made a name for himself as observer and reporter of Russia in process of changing from an old world to a new world. Now he turns back the pages in his own life and shares his youthful memories with his readers. In the process, one sees Russia before the Revolution from the standpoint of a poverty-stricken family in a sordid, ignorant Russian village. Then comes the immigration to America, and the early months of facing problems of adjustment and problems of living in a city. Chance through an opportunity in his way to get a job on a farm -- and he gained an appreciation of the life of the American ""peasant class"" -- which ultimately gave him the basis for his commision to revisit Russia and study the new scene. Human document, and fascinating reading.
