MISTER MOSES

In a valley in the Congo, Father Felix runs his mission for the Ubanga-pursuing a tolerant course between original sin and aboriginal salvation, helped by Agnes, a nurse, a militantly virtuous female. (She'd been too long with Schweitzer.) Just as the building of a new dam necessitates the evacuation of the valley, by resistant natives, Dr. Joe Moses appears- a medicine show man, selling strange elixirs to his susceptible public, arousing the angry disapproval of Agnes although Father Felix is more tolerant. Religion too may be a placebo. It is Mister Moses, quack-or even crook, who, if truculently, is able to lead the natives on their exodus to the promised land, who has an authority even Father Felix cannot match, and in the forty day trek to come narrows the distance between saints and sinners, ends and means.... Maybe not deep- or subtle, but a cheerful, cheeky story.
