by Max Lerner ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 25, 1948
I have seen only parts of this new collection of Max Lerner's pieces, many of which will be familiar to readers of the New York newspaper, PM. Editorials, commentary, essays, some of them -- in a collection similar in flavor and penetrating analysis to the earlier volume, Public Papers. There is, inevitably, some material that dates, but history recall is a popular pasttime. Some of the pieces have made lasting contribution to a keener perception of the passing scene, and are permanent contributions. There are notes on contemporary issues; literary criticism where the topic is of broader interest; controversial issues soundly weighed; notes on economics and politics; personality sketches; current history in the making; national and international topics. There are few editorial writers who challenge one's thinking so frequently as Lerner. Much of this volume bears the acid test of re-reading.
