BEACH BEFORE BREAKFAST

For the numberless children who have never seen the sea or enjoyed a clean, empty stretch of early morning shoreline, Maxine Kumin presents what her publisher has properly labelled a ""mood piece."" This is quite a departure from her recent and well-done easy readers -- Eggs, of Things, More Eggs of Things. ""I""- an adult voice, recounts what ""you""- a young boy did on an active round of pre-breakfast clam digging, oyster raking and a trip to the family lobster pots. This tells how these things are done, what it really feels like and it is short enough so that the ""I"" and ""You"" (a most difficult approach to sustain) hasn't the chance to cloy or annoy. Leonard Weisgard's illustrations, both the ones in full color and the black and whites, add a perfect visual dimension to the activities described, capturing the look and feel of seashore life. The book can add another dimension to the daydreams of the inland-bound but, like most ""mood pieces,"" it will have to be gently pushed to its audience.
