DOWN TO THE BEACH

The onomatopoetic verities of the seashore -- ""little waves/Lapping against the sand, slapping at the little beach"" and the HOOOoooooo of a fog horn as ""it says/ To other boats. HOOoooo./ Take care out there. HOOOO/ We don't want to bump into you"" -- are accompanied by pale watercolors which are almost soporific in their tidiness and uninvolvement. This is a muted, bedtime version of the beach without shouting children or gritty sand -- intended, no doubt, for first time visitors who need to be reassured of the ocean's benevolence. And likely to be very quickly outgrown.
