Returning to the mountain and corn pone country of her other stories (Surprise for Peter Pocket etc.) here is another short, pleasingly rhythmical book. Its heroine, twelve year old Hildy Brooks, is presented with the problem of looking after the family when her mother must go and tend a sick friend for a month. As each situation arises- house cleaning, a semi-serious accident, lending the fields etc.- Hildy proves wise-witted enough to keep things intact and happy. The dialect may somewhat limit the appeal.
