Mr. Ellis (Run, Rainey Run and Softly Roars the Lion) is one of those rare animal-nature writers whose crisp and clear-eyed writing suggests that he considers the lower orders their own excuse for being. The creature under scrutiny--a Canadian goose--is neither an extension of an author's practiced sublimations, nor a stuffed and mounted specimen of hand-and-mandible across the millennia. Duke is the gander who stayed behind on a marsh sanctuary with his pinioned mate; who protected the goslings after his mate's death; who travelled alone until he guided a crippled goose back to the haven. Although there is some attempt to parallel the ways of Duke with the progress of a grieving widower, Duke is all goose, and a handsome wingspread wide.
