What do you do with a dog who doesn't give a damn?"" You cope. At least Mr. Ellis, an Associate Editor for Field and Stream learned to. From the time Rainey buried Aristotle, an aging mallard duck alive, to the last hunt when he was incapacitated by a skunk, there was rarely a typical doggy moment. Rainey was an irascible, independent spirit, a retriever who made up his own rules. He refused to act as stud or pet, recovered from encephalitis after a veternarian predicted that he would never walk again, survived a fight to the death that left a tooth in his skull, a mild stroke as well as minor daily incidents such as getting stuck in a culvert. Then there was his one passion--the hunt, and he was an expert even if he disregarded the finer points of pointing. Mr. Ellis writes with clarity and affection. It's for the field and stream follower.
