SOFTLY ROARS THE LION

Author of the delightful dog story, Run, Raincy, Run (1967), Mr. Ellis again, with neither pretension nor slobber, tells a happy tale of animals. In the author's Peaceable Kingdom the lion lies down with the deer, both animals rescued as orphans by the ranching Gallagher family. Grown to a feisty adulthood, lion and deer take off on their own, learn the ways of the wild, but return to the old manse for some wide-ranging poaching of animals and grain. An aroused neighborhood demands the destruction of the animals. Given the sad chore by lottery. Jim Gallagher opts for humane traps, and at the close lion and deer are crated away to a safe haven in a national forest preserve. The pair are likable beasts in spite of deadly antler and fang, and their confrontations in the wilderness are involving. Mr. Ellis shrewdly observes animals on the prowl and by the fireside with a commonsense and affectionate perspective. A lion's share of agreeable animal entertainment.
