Patched and perky, Mayer's googley-eyed little Liza Lou could be a much younger, black Daisy Mae--and no doubt some will see her as a female Sambo. But Mayer saves his real efforts for the Swamp Haunt, Witch, Gobblygook and hoofed devil that threaten the little girl during her jaunts through the Yeller Belly Swamp. This specialist in terrible trolls and nightmares in closets outdoes himself with these pimpled noses, creepy claws, beast-like haunches, and general ugliness. Characteristically, he borrows from Brer Rabbit for the clever ruses with which Liza Lou outsmarts the monsters and from Hansel and Gretel for her disposal of the witch. You'll have more than one reason to be leery of this, even though you can't deny a gruesome fascination.
