THOMAS JEFFERSON: A Profile

Merrill Peterson, author of The Jefferson Image in the American Mind, has selected useful material for this anthology in the American Profiles series. The focus is on Jefferson the historical figure, his intellectual world, and on the problems of biography. Like other books in this series, Thomas Jefferson: A Profile is designed for high school or college classroom use. The eleven selections, representing a wide spectrum of opinion, are not intended to provide a complete profile of Jefferson; at least, this is not the editor's intention. Jefferson the scientist, president, and educator is barely visible. Compared to other readers in American history and biography, the American Profiles books are skeletal. In this volume, as in the others, introduction and bibliography are slight. Information on the contributors is non-existent. Students deserve something better.
