Leslie's parents are divorced, her father is married to a woman with two dreadful children and truly yucky taste, and Leslie, 15, is unhappy with her teacher mother, who is into sexual self-fulfillment. Only her old friend Ron, a fellow-musician in the high school orchestra, and Ron's understanding divorced mother, are there when she needs someone--as when one of her mother's crude weekend pickups makes a pass at her. Then her mother decides to stabilize and marry Kesey, Leslie's beloved fifth-grade teacher and still her friend, who is already married and the father of four. Leslie doesn't know how she feels about that, especially as they plan to move and she would have to leave both Ron and Brian, the popular though conceited senior who has recently taken her up. Brian wants her to go off with him, but then a girlfriend's fatal car accident puts everyone to the test, and Leslie decides to go with her mother and Kesey, leaving her own life open. As such contemporary mixed-up situations go, this one has more human characters, less black-and-white plotting, and a more satisfactory conclusion than many.
