THE SILVER WOLF

Another historical mystery-adventure set in the pre-Civil war days of the Santa Fe trail. Although Mr. Allen has supplied us with several books of this type, he never descends to formula, and what may be lacking in probability of story is always compensated for by sound action and absorbing, scintillating Mudhen dialogue. This time the boyhood character of Kit Carson is incorporated into the story to be the companion of young Judd Hunter, who joined Captain Bent's trading outfit to cross desert and mountains to Santa Fe in wagons. Judd's dreams of meeting his brother in Santa Fe are smashed when sinister Jake Castro rides up to the train with the brother's body. Kit and Judd's suspicion that Hunter met with foul play because of a silver mine are confirmed in Santa Fe after testimony from Hunter's Indian friend, Ai. The boys then set out to find the silver mine, of which a miniature silver wolf found on Hunter's body, is the ""map"". Treks across the blazing desert, mystery, likeable characters, and rough-housing with Kit -- withal an exciting yarn.
