THE TALES OF OLGA DA POLGA

Garrulous, cheeky and omnivorous, Olga da Polga squeaks through a series of adventures in her new life with a family she affectionately knows as Mr., Mrs., and Karen Sawdust. Whether winning a prize rosette for The Fattest Guinea Pig at a pet show (in due recognition of her motto: EAT MORE, THINK LESS), scaring herself silly with a game called STARTING A RUMOR, or setting off in high spirits for the Elysian Fields which lie just beyond the shrubbery, Olga remains a completely lovable egotist. In quieter times, Olga entertains the neighborhood animals with tall tales about her guinea pig ancestors in far off Peru and, in reveries on her aristocratic name, summons up visions of ""fields awash with oats and beautiful princesses,"" and her observations -- of her first hailstorm, the Sawdusts' Christmas celebration, and the trauma of being transported from pet store to her new home in a cardboard box -- are perfectly scaled to a guinea pig's eye-view. Olga may not be destined to go as far as her fellow Peruvian Paddington, but like him she transforms childishness into virtue and child-sized scrapes into triumphs with an elan that's contagious.
