Blue Skies most of the way -- and Irving Berlin's still happily surrounded by his once writing wife Ellin Mackay and his two daughters and grandchildren but are there any others who want to spend 200 pages Cheek to Cheek with him? He doesn't think so (never wanted his story written) and Freedland who did the equally admiring, undifferentiated biography of Jolson in 1972, now does a quick reprise of Berlin's life (born in Siberia; starting out as a songwriter; hitting it big with Alexander's Ragtime Band; the girl he loved who died of typhoid, but not for Always since there was Ellin; the shows and films) -- a good man, a great popular song writer. but perhaps it would have been better to let him just Say It With Music.
