Hawk Mountain Sanctuary (in eastern Pennsylvania) does not need more publicity -- its migrating birds, once victims of the hunter's gun, are now threatened by the crowds that come to see them and the disturbance they make. This account of its history and a day of autumn birding will probably attract additional visitors. Harwood, an amateur ornithologist who has also focused his binoculars upon the Vice Presidency (KR, 1966), knows his Accipitridae and Falconidae -- broadwings (the most numerous), ospreys, eagles, red-tailed and red-shouldered hawks, etc. He's met and admires the conservationists who -- before ecology became a fad -- sought to protect these species. A pleasantly written book for spyglass enthusiasts and sometime naturalists, as refreshing as a Sunday morning outdoors.
