APPLEBY AND HONEYBATH

Innes' veteran retired-sleuth Sir John Appleby joins up with painter Charles Honeybath (Lord Mullion's Secret) for some leisurely investigation--when they're both weekend guests at Grinton Hall, where Honeybath spies a seated dead body in the little-used library. Then, however, before Sir John can view the corpse, it disappears! So Sir J. and Honeybath are soon finding a secret passageway, with evidence that the vanished deceased was a scholar surreptitiously living in a cubbyhole behind the library. But why? What precious documents are concealed in the Grinton library--so despised by the estate's current, anti-intellectual owner? And why are some of the other guests behaving so suspiciously? Are they, too, out to grab Grinton Hall's assorted buried art/ literary treasures? The answers are unsurprising one and all; the suspense is nil. But Sir John and Honeybath, if unimpressive detectives, are pleasantly wry, cultivated company--and those who continue to read Innes for his bookish allusions and his gentle satire will not be disappointed by this low-key caper/mystery.
