This is volume two of the trilogy that began with An Alien Heat. The decadent amusements of the immortals at the end of time have lost their savor for Jherek Carnelian, who continues to pine for Mrs. Underwood, the involuntary chrononaut, and to search for a way to rejoin her in her own era of Victorian England. In the course of a hunting party for a troupe of feisty alien musicians, Jherek encounters a robot nurse whose first instinct is to make him one of her charges but who finally consents to send him back in time. His reunion with Mrs. Underwood proves delightful for Jherek but singularly complicated for everyone else, including Mr. Underwood, H.G. Wells, Frank Harris, the London police force, various time travelers and everyone else embroiled in the ensuing chaos. What's more, the fabric of time itself is beginning to come unraveled. Any resolution will have to wait for volume three. A coruscatingly clever romp.
