ANTS ARE FUN

Ants are okay but not as much fun as reading mirror writing in Miss Myrick's first, The Secret Three, and the text isn't as far from standard easy reading as you'd expect from this series. Still, the arrival of a new boy on the block, Don, with an ant house occasions some informative observations and a little excitement when the glass breaks, Jack's horned toad eats the survivors, and Jack and Jimmy join Don in looking for a new nest to domesticate. What they find under a stone is a raiding party of red ants decapitating the blacks and kidnapping their babies for food and forced labor (an episode little girls may oooh over). Later the boys locate another nest, intact, and construct a new house--explained with step-by-step precision. Youngsters will know a good deal about ants when they finish the book, more if they build the house, but they may not think they've read much of a story.
