The new generation growing up in the old setting, pulled up by the roots through the invasion of modern life -- motor cars, radios, dreams of a new way of life -- a far cry from the humdrum existence of their elders. Typical of the new spirit is Cello Henderson, and yet, when the door of opportunity is closed, she accepts her fate, marries her ""steady"" and settles down to a peaceful, constructive existence. An Upper Michigan lumber town, with the lake and the pines and an isolated group of coal people. This story won first prize in the Hopwood Award Contest at the University of Michigan, in 1933.
