The surface of a summer's visit has tormented depths and the atmosphere of friendship is agitated by the questions raised. Phyllis Cutler has asked Josh and Lucy Blair to invite her family to Vermont without her husband James' knowledge because he still is terribly concerned over the suicide of one of his most promising students. She thinks the Blairs from their long affection for James can help him lose his miserable guilt but James is not to be seduced by Josh's efforts and when Josh turns on Phyllis, blaming her for making the condition worse by her worry, the situation becomes embarrassing. The freeing of a captured raccoon, an offer of a job for James, the wind up of a day of tree felling, send the Cutlers home with a sense of loss, and leave the Blairs with the knowledge that James is stronger than they. Against the succession of perfect summer days and activities the season of discontent rolls on revealing the loneliness and lacks in human relationships with clean cut ability. Upper level women's market here.
