....... and it's a pretty meagre ration- largely sentiment- for the lives here in a New York City slum. Cathy, eighteen, lives there with her father who drinks- and plays the horses, and mothers the much younger Sis- an anxious child haunted by her fears and afraid that Cathy will leave her. Ed Myers, a salesman, falls in love with Cathy and when he tries to take both girls away from the poverty here he faces the hostility of their father who throws him out. He marries Cathy, and moves in with them, and finally the old man is brought to the point of acknowledgement and a grudging acceptance.... Not much light comes through the airshafts of these tenement windows-- but notwithstanding, the tone is sad- rather than sombre.
