This is a mammoth -- and with the prestige of the Vogue name, it should roll up a substantial- and permanent- sales record. Taking into consideration the new and more human approach to the subject, the revolutionary changes of the last 20 years, the author presents her work as a new standard, based on what millions now accept. Good taste is a matter of feeling as well as knowing, but an authoritative reference book on established custom and procedure backs up feeling with knowledge. She discusses under Winners in General a wide range of topics, from manners in public places to manners on the job, with table manners, tipping, clubs, personal publicity, word usage as only a few of the things covered. Subsequent sections take up specifically Ceremonies and Events, Weddings, Household Customs, Furnishing a House, Entertaining. There is inevitably some overlapping and repetition. There's a tendency to direct a good deal of the text to the monied classes. But the facts are there, in friendly, readable, practical form.
