by Miriam Cohen ‧ RELEASE DATE: Sept. 12, 1977
Back in the classroom with Cohen and Hoban and Jim and Anna Maria and George, it's reading-readiness time. Anna Maria can ""really read,"" George pretends to, Willy and Sammy talk it up, and Jim frets: ""Everywhere there is reading or writing, writing or reading."" But he'll read when he's ready, the (nice, comfortable, non-swinging) teacher assures him, and when a rip changes the sign, ""DON'T LET THE HAMSTERS OUT,"" to ""DO,"" Jim spots the mistake before harm can come to them. ""That,"" says the teacher, ""was reading""--what Jim has been waiting for ""all my life."" Fresh and apt as ever, with an infusion of Frances-like wit in the spoken words: a lesson on various levels.
