Before the outbreak of the Civil War, women could not venture too far outside the kitchen. To ten year old Miney Glossbrenner, this was an unjust situation, for in all her prayers, she asked for a chance to prove her capabilities. When Father goes off to war, Miney is given the opportunity to cope with responsibility as she learns to shop for the family, tend the horses, guide her brothers and help mother in countless ways. Having coped with new labors and the task of decision making, it is a proud Miney who sets out to greet her father on the day of his return. Little homey episodes characterize a book which is adequate but undistinguished by any special sparkle.
