When his best friend Mike goes away for the summer, Stevie looks ahead to dull days. There wouldn't be anybody to think about monsters with, to do scary things with, and to make plans with; these thoughts pass through his mind over and over as Stevie sits on his grandmother's porch. The tempo of activity changes when he stops to find the source of strange noises as he bicycles over a bridge. He returns to his grandmother's with Debbie Savola, a happy little girl, and seven live puppies in a sack. Mr. Witherspoon, a rather grumpy old bachelor next door, consents to let Stevie settle his orphans in his empty barn. Stevie becomes superintendent, Debbie, godmother, and Mr. Witherspoon, reluctant godfather. In caring for the puppies and finding acceptable homes for them, Stevies grows a lot. When Mike returns at the end of the hot months, he sees the change in his friend; Stevie, in turn, looks at Mike and realizes his one-time partner in monster-mania is different. Low pressure, but amusing.
