SARA AND THE WINTER GIFT

Natural interaction in a pioneer setting: Sara Wayne has her own family and story as does Giff, a raccoon, who makes Sara's Indiana home his winter residence. The frequent appearances of Gooch, itinerant trader (and evil incarnate), intrude upon the cabin coterie, whether throwing dead squirrels at Sara, tempting the poor children, or kidnapping Gift to make someone a fine hat. Episodes within the farm framework see the family welcome a music and dancing teacher, an artist (French, paints animals), and a Philadelphia lawyer. Gift escapes from Gooch, returns momentarily but Sara realizes her pet belongs in the wild. Despite the gentle detail there is so little story that slow readers may fall asleep before the action never happens, and there is little to make the past present.
