GIRAFFE: The Silent Giant

The giraffe wowed Paris in 1827; it impressed a 15th-century Italian traveler who described it as ""almost like the ostrich""; and today it seems to inspire special affection from the makers of children's books. This is a more traditional looking, younger oriented portrait than MacClintock and Mochi's Natural History of the Giraffe (1973), but the black and white drawings--of giraffes, their evolutionary ancestors, and of our ancestor's conceptions of the giraffee--lend an aura of stateliness to the simple facts of the giraffe's life and reinforce Schlein's impassioned reaction to a 19th-century description of shooting the animal for sport. Well-made.
