ERIC AND MATILDA

In a flock of geese (suggestive ink outline) only Matilda stands out (pink beak); Eric (yellow beak) watching the parade go by, falls in love with her. He joins up and shows off with every kind of antic, but she never blinks till on the advice of the owl he tells her I love you. ""I noticed you the first day you came,"" she says. ""I saw you do those things. But I didn't know you loved me till you told me just now."" In simple, excessively repetitious sketches, the essence of every romance--applicable to friendship perhaps, but not every child will make the connection, and the sameness of the illustrations may tune them out before they do.
