The size reflects the price and suggests the more-than-casual motivation and more-than-manual application parents will need to encompass the contents; it also reflects the elaboration of guiding principles (what children are like, what do you want your child to be like) into general principles of guidance (arranging surroundings, dealing directly) and on into specific techniques--for all children, for particular stages of development, for specific situations and problems. At two, you don't take no for an answer--it may mean yes, can certainly be deflected; when play erupts into aggressiveness and tears, there are alternatives to enforced sharing and taking turns. Dr. Mason (Professor of Psychology at Scripps College and long-time nursery school director) offers similarly specific and detailed advice for handling ""business activities""--eating, sleeping, toilet training, dressing, etc.--and for guiding feelings of anger, jealousy and fear (including the circumstances of hospitalization and death) and the resulting tensional outlets. ""Getting along with other people"" means the new baby and other natural contacts and may mean nursery school (with criteria for evaluation). As the author acknowledges, this is all common sense reinforced with experience (and shared via individual cases); it is flexible and comprehensive enough to serve as the all-purpose counselor.
