Sir Robert Lange, a Regency ""Corinthian"" who has just entered a betrothal-of-convenience with his ""bacon-brained"" cousin Cynthia, makes a boozy bet one night with his cronies: he wagers that he can earn his living for the next few months. So off goes Sir Robert, disguised as a commoner, to Ireland--where he takes the post of head groom on the estate of Lord Roderick Kildare, whose sister Sheila is a spoiled, foot-stamping tease. (There've been 14 grooms in the past year: ""Either Shells twists them about her thumb. . . or they think her free and easy ways are an invitation to take liberties. . . ."") Sir R., of course, proves more than a match for petulant Sheila: she soon finds herself becoming downright demure with her groom--especially after he gives her dancing lessons and rescues her from lascivious highwaymen. So it's Sir Robert (now out of disguise) who escorts Sheila to her first London season; Love blooms; Shells is distressed, Cartland-style, by Robert's mistress-y past. But eventually all gets put right--with cousin Cynthia having conveniently fallen for Robert's best chum Drew in the interim. Without the amusing gimmick that gave Cummings' See No Love (1983) a slight boost: competent, light Regency, decidedly short on sparkle.
