Youngest sons who marry frog-wives, taars afflicted with goat-ears, magic rings and animals and fruits personified enrich a choice collection of folk tales and fables from Serbia. Joan Kiddell-Monroe, who has illustrated the seven previous books in the Oxford Myths and Legends Series, has done the decorations and illustrations with a feeling for Oriental influences to interpret the stories. But, competent as her contribution is, one might wish for even finer exotic expressions to interpret a flavorful, varied collection of sly and amusing fairy tales, myths and legends. These have just enough of the improbable and bizarre to absorb youngsters, whether they hear or read them.
