The title story identifies a cripple with an injured locust for a bitter denial of comparison; there are a couple about extra-martial affairs; there's a music teacher, colored servants, the head of a reformatory, vacationists, clothes, a grim obstetric nurse, some children -- all caught in microscopic precision. There are emotional climates, moments of deep knowledge and a penetration of the currents below the surface of action and words that give these a sensitivity and distinction. A first appearance to be called to the attention of those who follow new writers and the short story.
