POOR CARL

A dog dressed as--and moving like--a small boy pities his new baby brother: Carl has to wait till someone gets him tip; his food is yucky; he can only watch while the big kids play together. On the other hand, there are times his big brother envies him; when Carl's the center of attention, and when he doesn't have to do chores. But--and here's what sets this rendition of the familiar sibling comparison apart--sometimes the two brothers have a good time together, even though Carl is still a baby. Carlson's matter-of-fact canines are almost more people-like than people: her bright colors and bold designs have real child appeal. A satisfactory addition to its genre.
