SIDE SADDLE FOR DANDY

Colonial Carolina during the threat of the French and Indian wars is the background of Nancy Faulkner's third book about the period (see Rebel Drums- 1952 and The West is on Your Left Hand- 195). Coupled with an impending raid on the Clark's large estate, is the story of the making of a lady- for motherless young Dandy has been raised as a boy in a man's world- until Aunt Cordelia and a cousin, Polly, appear on the scene. Chafing at Aunt Cordelia's bit of propriety, Dandy makes her bargains, has her adventures. She and Polly make friends by exchanging ways of life- the rough for the polite. Then with her brother Chris, Dandy finds a wounded Cherokee, and through him they are able to stave off the pro French Shawnees. For tens and elevens as well.
