Vivid, sketch-like chapters tell of Joan's blazing rise to fame and tremendous accusation- and although short shrift is made of some of the political elements (such as Tremouille's treachery) that lead to her downfall, there are the essentials in the network of human greed and stupidity that led to the burning of a saint.
