Here's what happens when the inhabitants of an island, off Cape Cod, realize that Russians have landed -- and their day of defense becomes the start of a tradition. The Russian submarine goes aground; its captain sends a detachment to find a motorboat to pull it off the sandbar and the men's first encounter with the postmistress is the signal for an alert -- which no one at first believes. The rousing of the local police, all the residents -- and their wives, the commotion at the only drinking place, the defection of one of the Russians, the minute-man preparations, the Russian Captain's trouble with insurgents, the foot and car chase, the destruction of the one boat the Russians get, the battle at the town dump (trash for ammunition) and the attempt to sabotage the submarine (an islander becoming an involuntary stowaway) make up a busy plot. The explicit humor and the implicit comedy situation combine into few real risibilities.
