The meeting of Ned Stowe and Stuart Hammer results in tight plans for murder: Stowe to do in Hammer's uncle, and Hammer to kill Stowe's wife. But some truths about Hammer's inhumanity and the guilt of his wife's death that enchains Stowe bring him out of his complete surrender to expiate her killing. Blake handles this repetition with some different twists to keep it fresh. A prefatory note admits the similarity of this to Strangers On A Train, Patricia Highsmith, 1950, and blames only coincidence.
