The love of Daisy Bland for Hugo Chesterman is tested throughout their relationship when he takes her from the respectable world she has known into the questionable life of a burglar. From a social whirl to the underworld as money comes and goes, Daisy worships her Hugo and when he is hunted for the murder of a police inspector she still believes his innocence even though he asks her to hide a gun. Through their ""best"" friend Jacques, an abortionist and unscrupulous, Hugo is betrayed to the police and Daisy, following Jacques' treacherous advice, gives damning evidence. Aware of its results, she changes her story, and, although, pregnant, holds to it, but does not save Hugo. Based on a criminal case, this is an able diagnosis of a social outlaw, and the woman whose love for him recognized no guilt and of the processes of law and justice which caught him. Will double in the mystery field.
