Leen's superior black and white photos, taken for this book in the wild and in zoos, reservations, etc., bring us into the worlds of fifty animals -- from the Florida key deer, the Delmarva fox squirrel and the New Jersey Pine Barrens' tree frog to the woodland caribou and desert bighorn sheep -- which she reasonably considers to be threatened though not all meet the Interior Department's rigid standards for the ""endangered"" designation and some (such as the whooping crane and the sea otter) have made encouraging recent comebacks as a result of conservationist efforts. The photos -- up to ten per species -- include a dramatic close-up of a California condor poised for flight, an engaging social study of pairs of prairie dogs, and an impressive closing series on the hatching and feeding of young peregrine falcons bred in captivity. Davis provides a caption-like paragraph of text, which covers habitat and sources of threat, for each animal, and official lists of threatened and extinct animals plus addresses of conservationist and environmental action groups are appended.
