This isn't up to its predecessors, though there's the making of a good story of English family life, post-war. A pair of party shoes and a long white dress arrive from America and inspire the entire family to think of ways to use them. The good doctor's numerous progeny arrange a pageant with more acts than the reader cares to read about in all their infinite detail, and multitude of characters. The story has a good half dozen happy endings, as Americans buy the old castle for a rest home, the dance-minded girl goes to ballet school, Salina, the ""outsider"", hears that her parents at last have coal, a fire is quenched, and so on. Pretty dull in areas.
